Diet Scambusting

Diet Scambusting

So I spend a bit of time networking online with other personal trainers and it is always interesting. There’s some really good guys and girls out there than you can learn a lot from, whether in regard to actually training people or just being a smarter business person or whatever else. You have a few moments of concern where someone seems a little… lets say misinformed regarding what’s helpful or important in diet and exercise programs, but for the most part really knowledgeable inspiring human beings who are passionate about helping others.

Here’s what’s weird though.

The spammers.

Now I guess the nature of spamming is that you just plaster your shit all over the internet and hope a few people will get sucked in by it and give you their credit card details or their email address or whatever it is you’re trying to get from them. But when you come on to a forum for qualified, professional personal trainers and nutritionists and post spam selling some absolute scam of a diet program… well I’m thinking if you’re trying to sell a scam diet you might find a better target group than people who are (a) already in shape, (b) in the business of getting other people in shape, and (c) know better than to believe any of your crap for even a second. Also you might not want to do it with a facebook profile that “joined last wednesday” and has no friends. I mean really.

Really?

Anyway this was pretty obvious transparent spam to my eyes but I checked it out and watched a little of the video anyway and the thing is, the claims are quite similar to a lot of diets that might not be quite so obviously dodgy to the untrained eye of the average overweight person. As the saying goes “spammers gonna spam” but the problem is, the more people get sucked in by these scams (and that goes for the Very Low Calorie diet plans & products sold in legit pharmacies as well), the more people there will be out there saying “I have tried EVERY diet and none of them worked. It is IMPOSSIBLE for me to lose weight and keep it off”.

For obvious reasons I won’t post the link but here’s the text of the post. This is the same sort of garbage most of these diet plans are pushing these days, right?

THE DIET SOLUTION

Stop Dieting…Start Eating…and Start Living

3 Principles

1. Know the exact foods that cause accelerated fat burning in your body
2. Know the particular foods that are preventing fat burning
3. Put the right foods together in a certain way to create the FAT BURNING EFFECT

Don’t Worry, this is NOT…

* Another crash diet
* Another crazy diet scam
* Another sales pitch for weight loss pills
* Another starvation diet

…BUT this is REAL information you can use
RIGHT NOW!!

It sounds pretty good right? Unless of course, if you’ve followed my blog for a while already in which case you’ll already know what’s wrong with this. Lets look at their 3 principles and shoot them down in flames.

1. Know the exact foods that cause accelerated fat burning in your body.

Certain foods may actually assist somewhat in burning more fat, due to thermogenic effects for example. I’m thinking if you have dialled in a tight nutrition plan with exactly the right amount of calories and the right breakdown of macronutrients to get the absolute best results from the right training program, this might be a valuable bit of information that helps get that maybe… oh, 1 or 2% extra results?

Like you might have heard me say a few times in other entries though, this would be considered the finest of fine tuning on top of a perfect training and nutrition plan. But if you don’t have all of that absolutely perfect… meh.

2. Know the particular foods that are preventing fat burning.

As far as I’m aware, there are none.

3. Put the right foods together in a certain way to create the FAT BURNING EFFECT

Much the same as I said in response to point #1.

To burn fat is pretty simple really. Assuming you’re actually overweight; determine an appropriate amount of calories (and macronutrient ratios) to maintain a healthy weight while still allowing adequate resources to get the best results from training. Then, start lifting some weights to encourage muscle growth. Adding muscle while reducing over all body weight can only mean one thing, right? The reduced weight can only be due to burning off those body fat stores.

Read that again and take a moment to really consider how simple it is. You do have to train hard so I’m not saying it’s “easy”, but it is very simple and easy to understand. All that is required is patience and consistency, not secret formulas or magical combinations of foods that only these dubious internet marketers know about, for some reason.

Always remember the bottom line; you are either consuming the right amount of calories to support your healthy goal weight, or you are not. Bodyweight is determined by amount of calories consumed, body composition (aka “tone”) is determined by training.   If you don’t have these basic factors locked in, all the fine tuning and focus on the complex details won’t make a lick of difference.

Disregard all the scams, fads and starvation diets, and do what is actually required.
