Obligatory end of 2014, looking forward to 2015 post

Didn’t it feel like a really fast year this year?

What an eventful one, too. Last year I remember thinking that the tide had turned and more sensible heads would prevail over those promoting disordered and restrictive approaches. It really did seem to be the case for a while there. Since then though? Wow. The whole anti-science and conspiracy theory stuff has just taken over, big time. So much controversy!

Locally the big story I suppose is Pete Evans going hardcore paleo, denouncing the medical and dietitian professions, promoting conspiracy theories, food shaming and victim blaming. To me this is really all just a deja vu of the sort of issues and arguments I had with people from the UK in the fitness industry a year or two back. Australia just appears to be a little slow to catch up to the level of hysteria that people overseas have already moved on from, because they realised it was all a load of shit.

The story will play out the same way here. The backlash against irresponsible, fear mongering charlatans pushing pseudoscience and outright nonsense is already picking up, both here and abroad. Sadly there will be a lot of damage done before this plays out though, just as there was overseas.

Other than TV chefs and other self appointed “experts” with no qualifications or experience on anything, the move towards more effective, sustainable, and “body positive” attitudes towards nutrition and fitness within the local industry is encouraging, and I am optimistic that this will be a continuing trend in the new year. Hopefully the few trainers out there with approaches that are both effective and sensible will thrive, and the irresponsible types will have to adapt or perish.

Now as to me, the huge thing this year was how much the Online Coaching program has taken off, and how successful my online clients all around the world have been. There have been a few different incarnations and versions of the online program over the past several years, from the first “No Excuse No Bullshit” program, to the “DHPT Via Email” system, and now the current system which I first launched around this time last year and which has evolved and improved ever since.

I have big plans for the New Year and now that I think about it, I will have to knuckle down if I want to have everything ready in time. Online programs appear to be the growth area of the industry in my observation of the latter part of this year, and in a way it makes sense. People are able to search for and find a coach who’s methods really suit them, rather than just a trainer who happens to be local.

February Update & Special Offers

Online Coaching has been huge the last few months, ever since we launched our first 12 Week Flexible Dieting Challenge. I started offering Custom Meal Planning late last year in addition to my very successful and very popular Custom Flexible Dieting Guidelines.

For those who don’t already know, the Custom Meal Planning is actually done by Miranda, who was a DaveHPT Online Coaching client from the US who lost 45kg and then went out and became qualified as a Personal Trainer and Certified Nutrition Adviser. So, my online clients get the benefit of working with two qualified professionals instead of just none.

That wasn’t a typo! A lot of the time you see people offering meal plans online… they’re not qualified or in anyway competent to provide any advice much less nutritional advice. And to be blunt, many of the professional people are no better, sending everyone the same pdf file with a generic list of the “healthy” foods they’re still allowed to eat. Maybe you can starve a few kilos off with these plans, but it’s not because you’re getting healthier and stronger. It’s for the opposite reason.

The weight loss plans we’re often shown from athletic, conditioning or other coaches are usually horrifying.

How we do it instead is, I crunch the numbers and determine target ranges for total calories as well as for the ratios of protein, carbohydrates, fats and fibre that will be optimal to maintain your healthy goal weight while fueling your active new lifestyle. It’s not starvation rations either. Miranda has the harder job of building a plan to hit those targets, with your choice of foods. Again, this isn’t just “eat it, it’s good for you”.

On top of all that my online clients get special access to my private DaveHPT Flexible Dieters group on facebook, where they’ll find details, instructions, photos and videos of the five different routines that make up the updated Power, Precision & Pump program they will be following in the gym. December 2013 Update

Wow… Summer is finally here and 2013 is almost over.

I’ve kicked December off with a 12 Week Flexible Dieting Challenge as you may be aware, and this will run through until the end February. We’re taking a long term approach, rather than extreme, restrictive crash diets, and this means my participants don’t need to be at all concerned about indulging over the Christmas period. A few of the early starters are already reporting in with great results so far.

In the new year we’ll be doing more of these Flexible Dieting Challenges, as well as Recovery Challenges for those who’ve been the victims of yo-yo dieting (or worse) in the past. All of my programs are based on getting fuelled up properly, and enjoying your meals without any guilt or other negative associations. Guilt based marketing is one of my least favourite things in the industry as well as unhealthy, restrictive diets and fear mongering about food choices. I’ll be stepping up the fight against these in the new year.

On the subject of Flexible Dieting, as you may already be aware I’m now able to offer Custom Meal Plans with a Certified Nutrition Advisor on board. It goes without saying, on any and all of these products and services my catch phrase applies: we aint going to be starving it off.

Although the Online Coaching side of the business is really taking off, I’ll still be available for one on one Personal Training from Doherty’s Gym in Brunswick, and I’ll be unveiling some new packages to suit everyone’s budget. If you’re serious about training, and budget is really the only issue…well, between the Online Services and live action in Brunswick, I aim to find a way to help everyone who’s serious.

September Update: Reality Based Training Systems

I just woke up in the night last night and thought “Reality Based Training Systems!” and then went back to sleep again. That’s what I do though, isn’t it? No nonsense, no “latest trend” in fitness, no magic potions or “secret tricks” like all the other internet fitness gurus are always harping on about… just stuff that is based in reality and works in the real world.

And it does work, very nicely.

Now as far as weight loss goes there’s a lot of nonsense put out there about the best way to go about this, and if you’re a trainer listening to those “get 1000 new clients tomorrow” type marketing coaches or if you’re a potential client watching those infomercials on the morning TV shows you’ll be told the best strategy is some kind of “extreme fat loss challenge” over a short period of time. Sounds great right? Suffer a little for a few weeks, get big, fast, dramatic results.

Meanwhile back in the real world though, that’s actually not good for people. In the real world, do the people you know who are actually already “in shape” (or just “normal sized” if they’re not of an athletic build) that way because they go on and off these crash diets, skipping meals, cutting out entire food groups and so on? I will wager the reality is quite the opposite; the normal sized people eat normally, and we all know that crash diets don’t work. They provide a temporary result at best, and backfire in the long run since all you are really doing is training your body to run on less fuel.

So if we’re talking about weight loss to get back down to “normal” size, let’s imagine a time when most people where about normal size and less were overweight or obese. Let’s say… the 1970s, for example. How did they do it? Contrary to what the marketing people would have you believe, they weren’t starving themselves, they didn’t all have a treadmill in the bedroom, they didn’t demonize certain food groups with restrictive diets, they weren’t all standing on some vibrating plate machine that makes exercise more effective, or whatever other stupid fad, product or industry buzzword you might be thinking of. They didn’t need any of that and neither do you.

In the real world we simply need to learn to enjoy a variety of foods to an amount that is suitable to maintain our goal weight, and we need to train strategically to build a strong, healthy and functional body type. I’ve had tremendous success with this approach with clients all around the world, without the unfortunate physical and emotional side effects that come with more restrictive, deprivation based methods.

Now for those who don’t need to lose weight and in fact want to increase mass… the strategy is quite similar. We consume more food to an amount suitable to achieve our goal weight, and we train strategically towards a lean, proportionate and symmetrical physique.

Whatever goal you have, you don’t need some kind of miracle product, medical breakthrough, brand new research backed diet program, gimmick or fad. You simply need to do what has worked for every other person in the real world who has stuck to it with some consistency.

It’s time for a half yearly update

What a year so far! Can you believe it is officially half way over?

I’d have to say this has probably been… actually scratch that, without question this has been my most successful year to date, and the momentum is just starting to build towards even more success in the future. A large part of this is due to the success of the DHPT Online Coaching Via Email system that I launched at the start of the year, as well as now being officially certified, approved and recommended at Doherty’s Gym for Personal Training In Brunswick.

I’ve managed to hit some performance and body composition goals of my own in the first 6 months of this year, but the far bigger story is the progress and results my clients have achieved locally and all around the world. Just as a few examples, we’re talking about young ladies following my Ultimate Body Sculpting program via email who’ve gotten such great results we’re seeing their progress photos all over the web being used to promote other people’s diet and exercise programs! You can go check in with them via my facebook page though and get the real story on how they got those amazing results.

We could talk about an other Online Coaching client who started with one of my free resistance training programs here on the website, and has since taken out 6 state records in power lifting. Or we could talk about the great progress my local clients are making towards better health, functional fitness and their goal weight and body type.

All of this is only the physical aspect and perhaps what I am most proud of is the changes that people report in with in regard to self confidence, self belief and over all quality of life. These changes happen not just due to physiological changes, but from forging a new identity of being someone who has what it takes to get up and work hard for what they want and deserve in life. It comes from taking the correct course of action and reaping the rewards for your efforts in terms of a stronger, healthier body that has been sculpted like a work of art.

Of course the people who have actually purchased the Online Coaching package and follow it diligently are getting the most amazing results, but there are also dozens reporting in with great results simply from following my free introductory resistance program.  Perhaps best of all is that all of these people are becoming ambassadors for weight loss, body sculpting and fitness programs that are based on a healthy, flexible and moderate approach, rather than dangerous and restrictive fad diets. Long time followers of this blog will know that this is something I am very passionate about, and now to have young people writing in to me to let me know that they have started eating an appropriate amount and variety of foods for the first time in a long time, without feeling guilty about it, and seeing positive changes in both their body and emotional health as a result… well, what can I even say about that?

Mission accomplished.
